Essendon running machine Nic Martin has written his name into the club record books in the Bombers’ thrilling win over St Kilda on Saturday evening.

Martin did as he pleased across half-back to rack up an extraordinary 44 disposals (31 kicks and 13 handballs), as well as eight marks.

It obliterated his previous best (32) and was the equal most ever in club history, joining teammate Darcy Parish, who has achieved the mark twice.

Martin was instrumental in the victory as the Bombers stormed home to seal an unlikely win with a brilliant final quarter.

The man of the moment was typically humble after the match.

“My running ability is my asset. Sometimes the ball bounces your way and tonight that was me,” he told Fox Footy.

St Kilda looked on track for a comfortable win after a hot start, but Essendon gradually worked their way back into the cost.

The Bombers threw everything at the Saints in the thrilling final term with Jake Stringer proving to be the hero with a brilliant set shot from beyond 50m with five minutes remaining.

The Saints had one final roll of the dice but couldn’t find another goal.
