Things to do in Staithes

The beauty of Staithes has traditionally attracted artists from across Britain, meaning there are plenty of galleries to explore for art lovers.

Every year the town celebrates its rich artistic heritage by holding the Festival of Arts and Heritage where there are exhibitions, workshops, tours, courses as well as food stalls and music performances.

One of the first things any visitor of Staithes should do is take a journey on the Illusion Trail, a free optical illusion trail painted all around the town by artist Paul Czainski where you can spot some amazing artwork while taking in the town’s sights.

The best reason to visit Staithes is for its natural beauty which visitors can take in by going on a coastal walk along the Cleveland Way National Trail. This walkway showcases the most breathtaking views of the town’s surrounding secluded coves, cliffside paths and sandy beaches.

Staithes is also located at the start of the Jurassic Coast in Yorkshire, and when the tide is out it is the perfect place for fossil hunting. It is quite common to find ammonites along the foreshore of Staithes without having to walk far.

Where to eat in Staithes

No seaside destination is worth visiting unless it offers some tasty fish and chips at the end of a day lounging on the beach, which is why visitors are urged to eat at Excelsior Fisheries while in Staithes,

Excelsior is a traditional fish and chip shop with high reviews, with many people praising it as having “simply the best” chippy in the area. On Trip Advisor, one reviewer said: “Absolutely delicious jumbo cod and chips. Great big flakes of fish. Batter was so tasty. Great staff. Definitely worth a visit.”

Anyone who would like to have some traditional British pub food should visit The Royal George, a bright red pub located at the bottom of Staithes. It is known for its ales and range of homemade dishes such as steak pie, crab sandwiches and extra mature sirloin steaks.

Those craving something sweet should make their way to Betsy and Bo, a local chocolate and deli shop known for its hot chocolate, cakes, truffles and a range of traditional sweets.

No matter what you choose to do in Staithes, it is the perfect place to take in Yorkshire’s incredible natural beauty as well as relax for a quiet beach holiday.
