Eggs can be stored in so many different places in the home, including the fridge, their carton or a basket on the kitchen counter.
While there’s no single right answer as to exactly where they should be kept, their longevity depends on it.
According to the experts at Professionals Secrets, their foolproof method is perfect for maximising the shelf life of eggs.
It means more than just keeping them in a certain place, but also on their exact position.
Sharing advice on the Professionals Secrets website, the experts said: “Eggs are both food and packaging in one. They will last a lot longer if stored in the fridge.
“One day at room temperature corresponds to about four days in the fridge.”
They added that the eggs should be kept in their original packaging as it “has been optimised to make the eggs keep as well as possible during transport and storage”.
That said, it’s important to check that each one is stored with the wide, rounded side up for maximum freshness.
The cooking professionals explained: “The egg’s pocket of air is situated in this end and will stop the yolk from – over time – floating up and sticking to the shell.
“Ordinary eggs from a large scale producer will keep for at least two months (66 days…) if you store them in their carton in a fridge and with the rounded side up.
“This can be several weeks longer than the expiration date on the carton.”
When it comes to cooking with stored eggs, there’s a simple test anyone can try to see how fresh they are.
This method involves cracking the eggs into a separate bowl before being added to other ingredients.
If the contents from the cracked egg look normal and smell normal, this is a good sign. However, the more watery the raw whites are, the less fresh the eggs.
