A driver was arrested after a pickup truck was driven onto a Monmouth County boardwalk, causing significant damage and forcing officials to close the area to pedestrians.
Julian Uribe Munoz, 39, of Spring Lake, was allegedly driving the truck when, at Ocean Avenue, the vehicle left the roadway and drove onto the boardwalk, becoming lodged in the railing, police said Monday. The crash was reported around 12:15 a.m.
Photos taken by police show the blue pickup’s front end trapped in the railings while first responders work to tow it off the boardwalk.
Munoz was taken to a hospital, but no other injuries were reported, police said. The truck was the sole vehicle involved.
Munoz was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended, being an unlicensed driver and other related offenses, police said. He was arrested and later released.
The vehicle’s owner, a Passaic man, was also charged with allowing a suspended driver to operate a motor vehicle and allowing the vehicle to be driven without a required interlock device.
The boardwalk’s damage is being assessed by Spring Lake officials, police said.
Authorities said Monday morning the boardwalk was temporarily closed off to pedestrians between Pitney and Howell avenues.
