China’s Xi calls for conquering tech and reform challenges as People’s Republic turns 75

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a rallying cry for the country to overcome challenges in reforms and technology amid China’s revitalisation push.

Xi made the comments when awarding national medals and honorary titles on Sunday as a part of a celebration to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1.

Wang Yongzhi, a pioneer of China’s manned space programme, was posthumously awarded the Medal of the Republic, the highest honorary medal granted by the central government. Wang died in June at age 91.

Wang Zhenyi, a pathophysiologist renowned for breakthroughs in the treatment of leukaemia, Li Zhensheng, a geneticist who specialises in the genetics of wheat, and war hero Huang Zongde were also awarded the Medal of the Republic.

China has spearheaded technological advancement to power economic growth and gain a stronger position in its tech rivalry with the US.
