A nearly two-week long search for a Brockton murder suspect ended Wednesday, and the suspect is now being held without bail, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz.
Massachusetts State Police found Donta Hood, 33, at an Assonet home Wednesday after investigators obtained a warrant for his arrest on Dec. 8 relating to the fatal shooting of Marvin Hill, 35, of Brockton, just three days earlier.
Hood pleaded not guilty during an arraignment at Brockton District Court late Wednesday on one count each of murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a weapon within 500 feet of a building, possession of a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
Brockton Police responded to a report of a shooting at about 6:17 p.m. on Dec. 5 in the area of 28 Lexington St. and Green Street. After arriving, first responders found a man, later identified as Marvin Hill, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Hill was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital before being medflighted to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston where he was pronounced dead.
Hood is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 25.
This is not the first time Hood has been locked up, according to the Brockton Enterprise.
The Brockton man was released from state prison in February 2022, just four months after he had been sentenced to nine years in prison on charges of involuntary manslaughter, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of a loaded firearm for shooting down Charles Evans in the city in May 2013.
Hood, initially convicted of the manslaughter charge in 2016, won an appeal and received credit for time previously served in custody, the Enterprise reported.
The May 2013 shooting came months after Hood was released from a 7 1⁄2 year sentence for selling cocaine in a school zone in 2008, the Herald reported at the time.
Hood was the first of the infamous group set free in the case pertaining to disgraced former state chemist Annie Dookhan and her alleged widespread mishandling of drug evidence to face a murder charge, the Herald had reported.
