Bridgeport man charged in shooting at Hollister Avenue home

BRIDGEPORT — A 33-year-old city man was arrested Thursday night in connection with a shooting that occurred at a Hollister Avenue home Sunday, according to police.

Akeim Thomas is charged with criminal attempt of first-degree assault of an elderly/disabled person, illegal discharge of a firearm, second-degree threatening, first-degree reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a child, disorderly conduct and second-degree criminal mischief, Bridgeport police Capt. Kevin Gilleran said in a news release.

Thomas’ bail was set at $750,000, and he will be arraigned in state Superior Court in Bridgeport at a later date, according to Gilleran.

Though details regarding the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available, Gilleran said there was more than one shooter in the Sunday incident and that a 67-year-old person shot Thomas in self-defense.

An area hospital notified police at around 12:40 p.m. Sunday that a 33-year-old man, later identified as Thomas, was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his abdomen, Gilleran said in a previous news release. Thomas was in critical condition at the time, but as of Friday was in stable condition and under police watch at a Connecticut hospital, according to Gilleran.

On Sunday afternoon, at around 3:45 p.m., dispatchers received information from citizens that a crime scene was observed within the 400 block of Hollister Avenue. Police responded and found “multiple items of evidence” within the residence, Gilleran said in the previous news release.

Police determined Thomas was injured while inside the Hollister Avenue residence, according to the news release.
