Bread doesn’t ‘belong’ in the fridge – where to store

Lora McLaughlin, better known as LORAfied, shared on her TikTok channel – full of food storage hacks – that bread shouldn’t be stored in the fridge.

“Are you still putting your bread in the refrigerator?” she asked on the video posted to social media.

If so, be warned that bread “can stale twice as fast” when stored in the fridge, so where else should it go?

Lora advised: “If you don’t want to leave it on the counter, stick it in the freezer.” In the video, viewers can see that Lora has wrapped her bread slices in a plastic bag.

One fan, Elnaz Albh102, agreed with Lora’s advice. “Bread stays so long in the freezer,” she said.

Another, Mommamerv said: “I did not know this about bread. Thanks for sharing this tip.”

There are, however, other common food staples that you might have been storing incorrectly in the fridge.

Pointing out other food items that “don’t belong” in the fridge, Lora listed:

  • Tomatoes
  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Honey
  • Olive oil.

Explaining why each of these food items shouldn’t be stored in the fridge, Lora began: “Tomatoes do best between 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit [which is the same as room temperature].”

Instead of storing tomatoes incorrectly in the fridge where they are likely to go off more quickly, they are better stored at room temperature.

To prolong the life of tomatoes, the key to storing them correctly is to store them, stem side down, onto a piece of kitchen roll.

For aesthetic purposes, the paper towel and tomatoes can be placed in a pretty mesh basket.

As for new potatoes, these can end up “gritty” and “sweet” if stored in the fridge, which can lead to a “strange” taste.

As such, these are better stored in a paper bag wrapped up outside of the fridge.

“Garlic gets a bit rubbery,” Lora said when the bulbs are stored in the fridge; these too should be stored in a basket.

“Onions get soft and mouldy in the fridge,” Lora added, referencing both red onions and brown onions. “Store these away from heat and potatoes,” Lora recommended.

“Unless you like crystallised honey and hard olive oil, let’s get these guys out of here too,” Lora said, referencing the fridge. “Stick those in the cabinet,” she suggested.
