The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday sent a show-cause notice to its MP Dilip Ghosh over the controversial remark he made against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The party has asked Ghosh to explain why he spoke about Mamata Banerjee in such a manner and asked him to issue an apology.

The controversy erupted on Tuesday after the BJP leader was heard mocking the family background of the West Bengal CM in a purported video clip.

Currently contesting from the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat, Ghosh mocked Trinamool Congress’ slogan of “Bangla Nijer Meye ke chai (Bengal wants its own daughter)”.

“When she goes to Goa, she says she is the daughter of Goa. In Tripura, she says she is the daughter of Tripura. First, let her clarify…,” he said.

In response, an enraged TMC filed a complaint with the Election Commission against the BJP MP and alleged that he “blatantly violated” the model code of conduct (MCC). It also said that such remarks reflect the “DNA of the saffron camp”.

In its complaint, the ruling party of West Bengal said, “Ghosh’s comments not only cross the boundaries of decency but also perpetuate a culture of misogyny and disrespect towards women in positions of power.”

Taking to X, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC wrote, “@DilipGhoshBJP is a disgrace in the name of political leadership! From challenging the lineage of Maa Durga to now questioning the ancestry of Smt. @MamataOfficial, he has wallowed in the filthiest depths of moral bankruptcy.”

The Trinamool Congress also said it is “crystal clear that Ghosh has zero respect for the women of Bengal, whether it be the revered goddess of Hinduism or the only woman CM of India”.

The ‘insider-outsider’ debate in the state gained momentum before the Assembly elections with the ruling TMC embracing Bengali sub-nationalism as its main poll plank against BJP’s Hindutva narrative. TMC called the BJP a “party of outsiders”.
