BJP: Abhijit Gangopadhyay gung-ho on BJP after quitting as High Court judge

Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, said that he would join BJP on Thursday. He claimed that West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress was “crumbling” and was “on the verge of collapse”.

Addressing a press conference here, Gangopadhyay said BJP’s slogan of “zero tolerance towards corruption” was the main reason why he was joining the saffron party.

“Trinamool Congress means corruption, corruption means Trinamool Congress,” Gangopadhyay reiterated while announcing his decision to join BJP on March 7. “Trinamool Congress is a party of miscreants — it is not a political party but a yatra (folk theatre) show — ‘Ma, Maati Manush,” he said.

“If the saffron party decides to field me, I will fight accordingly and follow BJP’s party line,” Gangopadhyay said. He expressed his desire to contest from Diamond Harbour, currently represented by Trinamool’s Abhishek Banerjee.

“Trinamool has collapsed and its condition is comparable to CPI-M’s situation in 2009,” he said, adding that “Narendra Modi is a hard-working politician with a vision for the country”.

Gangopadhyay’s orders in West Bengal recruitment cases led to the arrest of former education minister Partha Chatterjee.
