Beautiful seaside village with hardly any tourists is a great place to see seals | Travel News | Travel

The village of Ravenscar on the coast of Yorkshire offers dramatic clifftop views, rocky beach coves, and a great vantage point to spot seals. A 20-minute drive north of Scarborough, Ravenscar Beach is known as a magnet for fossil hunters and a walk away from Robin Hood’s Bay.

Popular walking routes include Lyke Wake walk and Howdale Moor and Brow Moor walk, according to Discover Yorkshire Coast.

Ravenscar to Robin Hood’s Bay is an 11-mile walk through the North York Moors and offers classic moorland scenery before following the Scarborough to Whitby railway line to the famous smugglers’ haunt.

Previous visitors have hailed Ravenscar for not “being too busy” and its stunning views, but warn of a steep walk down to the beach itself.

On Tripadvisor one reviewer commented: “Plenty of seals and views to die for, but it’s one hell of a drop to get there. I would recommend only for the fit and able bodied.

“An ice-cream treat at the shop in Ravenscar soon erased memories of the traumatic ascent.”

Another reviewer said of the place: “It’s a tortuous walk down a steep path (and back!) but you’re rewarded by a fascinating seal colony.

“We were lucky enough to meet one of the volunteer wardens, who was friendly, interesting and informative.”

A third noted: “This is a real highlight of the area, as you can witness lots of seals sitting on the rock and swimming in the sea in a natural environment.”

It takes about 45 minutes by bus from Scarborough railway station to the Post Office in Ravenscar.

Raven Hall Country House Hotel offers double, twin and single rooms as well as eight lodges.

The RSPCA advises anyone who wants to watch seals to move slowly and quietly, paying attention to any signs up on the beach.

It recommends keeping at least 100 metres away and to use binoculars to watch them. Dogs should be on a lead or left at home.
