Do you ever take a picture on holiday just to upload it to your socials?

Us too, but it turns out there are more Instagrammable spots closer to home than you think – Scotland.

So forget travelling the other side of the world to places such as Brazil, South Africa and New Zealand to get those Insta-worthy pics and opt for somewhere which has plenty to offer on the northern border of the UK.

What is the top spot in Scotland?

Edinburgh Castle thanks to having a staggering 723,165 Instagram posts using its hashtag on the social media platform.

The castle itself was built in the 11th century and has been occupied since the Iron Age. It has even received a TripAdvisor ‘Best of the Best Travellers Choice Award’ in 2023.

Those who have been to the castle have described it as “amazing”, “beautiful”, “a must-see” and “important” as well as being “highly recommended” to go to.

Private Tours Scotland looked at Instagram data for popular Scottish tourist destinations, to help find which attractions have been tagged the most by users.

In second place was Glencoe with 607,634 and scoring bronze was Loch Lomond with 596,695.

They were followed by Loch Ness (527,939) and Cairngorms National Park (331,923) who rounded up the top five.

Arthur’s Seat was another contender ranking the sixth most Instagrammable location in the country.

The hill itself is a short walk from Edinbrugh’s Royal Mile where travellers can go for a hike up to the top of Arthur’s Seat.

Let’s not forget Ben Nevis (276,055), the Isle of Arran (149,863), Eilean Donan Castle (108,495) and Stirling Castle (92,983).

How much does it cost to go to Edinburgh?

You can take a flight to the Scottish capital from all over the UK with flights starting from £25 each way.

Meanwhile, another mode of transport is going by train. Trainline is currently offering one-way single train tickets from £39.90 in May.

They are also offering ticket prices from £46 for one-way on Friday, great for those who are looking for a last-minute getaway.
