Beautiful road trip route visits Spain and France in one holiday | Travel News | Travel

Want to tick a road trip off your bucket list? There’s a breathtaking route in northern Spain and southern France that’s got highlights to please all the family.

Starting in Bilbao, a two hour flight from the UK, the road trip winds along the coast until finishing in Bordeaux.

Tourists can choose to take as long as they want to complete the road trip, depending on how much time they would like to spend in each destination.

Kick the journey off in Bilbao, one of Spain’s lesser-known cities, and visit the Guggenheim Museum, famed for its contemporary work and unique building.

From there, it’s just over an hour’s drive to beautiful San Sebastian. The Basque beach resort is loved by Spanish tourists but not as well known by Brits.

A leading resort since the 1800s, Biarritz is known for its expansive sandy beaches and surfing conditions.

The city is a little more expensive than other French hotspots, but tourists can save by picking up food from the Les Halles covered market or a supermarket and eating alfresco.

From Biarritz, it’s just over two hour’s drive to Bordeaux, the end point of this journey through Spain and France.

Bordeaux is one of France’s hippest cities and it’s also been named as one of Europe’s most walkable destinations.

Take a tour of one of the local vineyards or relax in Place de la Bourse with its incredible reflecting pool.

Tourists can extend the road trip by travelling onto La Rochelle or heading all the way up through France to catch the Eurotunnel back home.
