Beautiful European seaside town that’s one of the cheapest in the world | Travel News | Travel

Turkey is filled with a plethora of beautiful and cheap seaside towns that attract millions of Brits every single year.

Ahead of the busy summer season, the Post Office has put together a list of the best value destinations for British holidaymakers to travel to.

Coming in ninth on their list was the pretty Turkish seaside town of Marmaris which sits in the middle of the Turquoise Coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera.

Known for its bustling nightlife and beautiful beaches, its waters are well known for their amazing sailing and diving destinations.

The Post Office calculated each town’s score by combining the cost of eight items – a three-course meal for two with wine, a bottle of beer, a can of insect repellent, sun cream, a can of cola, a glass of wine, a cup of filter coffee, and a bottle of still water – and calculating the total cost of those items.

For Marmaris, the total cost of these items was £66.07, ahead of other popular tourist destinations such as Delhi, the Costa del Sol, Montego Bay, and Corfu.

However, the town could have been slightly higher up the list were it not for economic changes in Turkey.

The Post Office explained: “Despite the downward spiral of the Turkish lira, local prices in Marmaris restaurants and bars have more than doubled as owners try to overcome the challenge of inflationary price rises. Even after applying the favourable sterling exchange rate, barometer costs have risen 14 per cent to £66.07.”

Once in Marmaris, there are plenty of things to see and do in a region filled with natural wonders including looking around the marina, watching the Dancing Fountains, exploring the Marmaris Mountains, and the local museum.

The last of these, the museum, is set inside an epic castle that overlooks the bay and would have been used by defenders to warn of an impending attack on Marmaris.

People visiting the venue have commented on how it enables visitors to take a break from the bustling town. One TripAdvisor reviewer said: “Honestly, it’s the only cultural activity to do in Marmaris. Take a break from useless shopping and binge eating. The only quality spot in the place.”

Emma M added: “Have been to Marmaris a few times before but this was the first time visiting the castle. Multiple rooms showing parts of Turkey’s history, lovely colourful gardens and really great views of Marmaris.

“You wander up through the old town meaning you find little trinket shops, nice cafes etc on your way too. Would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something to do. Probably takes around 45 mins.”

Despite these positive reviews, travel guide Lonely Planet had a word of caution about this popular party town.

They said: “A popular resort town that swells to over a quarter-million people during summer, Marmaris is loud, brash and in your face all over town all of the time.

“It’s one of the few places along the coast where you might leave feeling more stressed out than when you arrived.”
