Barbecued bananas are ‘the perfect sweet treat’

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits when it comes to desserts, loved for their naturally sweet flavour and soft texture.

For years, many Britons have even enjoyed them cooked on a BBQ – a tradition based on a dessert known as “bananacue”.

The authentic dish is a type of Filipino street food made from fried saba bananas coated in caramelised brown sugar.

While modern toppings include chocolate, nuts, honey and syrup, the grilled bananas are still a classic dish, according to flavour expert and owner of Seasoned Pioneers, Matt Webster.

Sharing his take on the traditional recipe exclusively with Express.co.uk, Matt said: “This is the perfect sweet treat for the BBQ and one that everyone will love! It pairs perfectly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.”

Method

Always leave bananas in their skin when cooking them on the barbecue and ensure you have tinfoil to wrap them in.

First, make a lengthwise split along the inside of the bananas, but don’t cut through to the other side.

Next, sprinkle one tablespoon of brown sugar inside the slit of the banana, then sprinkle the ground cinnamon on top of the sugar for extra flavour.

Wrap the banana in tin foil, making sure it is well sealed.

Place the foil-wrapped banana on the BBQ grill and cook for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until it’s soft and the sugar has caramelised.

Once cooked, carefully unwrap the banana and transfer it to a serving plate.

While the bananas are perfect on their own, Matt suggested trying out a few flavour combinations.

He said: “Why not experiment with the flavours and add different toppings to your banana, such as almonds, chocolate chips or even a drizzle of honey?”
