Baramati, the home turf of Maharashtra’s powerful Pawars, goes to polls on May 7 (Tuesday) during Phase 3 of the Lok Sabha elections. The constituency, the traditional bastion of the Pawar family, has been among the headlines this time owing to a fierce turf war being played out between two family factions.

The see-saw family feud has intrigued and captivated voters, but has also left many of them confused and baffled. The battle for Pawar legacy in Baramati took an interesting turn when Ajit Pawar decided to field his wife Sunetra against his sister Supriya Sule.

Baramati Lok Sabha seat: Candidates
This is a direct fight between NCP’s Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Ajit Pawar, and NCP (SCP) candidate Supriya Sule, the daughter of Sharad Pawar.

Sule is a three-time sitting MP Sule. It may be noted here that Sunetra’s husband Ajit Pawar had switched over to the BJP-led NDA and became Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister a while ago.

Vijay Shivtare, a Shiv Sena (Shinde group) leader from Purandar Vidhan Sabha region and a known Ajit baiter, was set to fight for Baramati. He, however, later backed off after CM Shinde’s personal intervention, various reports said.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, NCP candidate Supriya Sule had won from the Baramati constituency, garnering 6,86,714 votes. The defeated candidate was BJP’s Kanchan Rahul Kool, who got 530,940 votes.

In 2019, the voter turnout in the constituency stood at 61.82 per cent. The NCP’s vote share in the 2019 elections was 53 per cent.

The 2024 polls come amid an ongoing feud in NCP following a bitter split. The Election Commission later recognised Ajit Pawar’s faction as the real NCP and supremo Sharad Pawar’s faction was given the name of NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).

Sharad Pawar first won from Baramati in 1984. In 1991, Ajit Pawar, his nephew won back the constituency. Since 1996, Baramati has been represented first by Sharad Pawar and then by Supriya Sule.
