Bananas keep fresh for two weeks with simple method – but experts warn there’s one catch

Bananas can be difficult to keep fresh as they sometimes spoil too early and go brown and spotty before they’re able to be eaten.

It only takes a few days to ripen when you buy them, and finding the golden period when they’re perfect can be difficult.

Fortunately, there’s a simple trick to keep them fresh for longer when they’re ready.

Banana experts at Chiquita suggested when your bananas are ripe and ready, you can chuck them into a fridge to hit “pause” on the process.

They said: “When they have fully ripened, it’s a good idea to store bananas in the fridge to extend their freshness – in a fridge, they will keep nicely for an extra week or two.”

The experts at Chiquita said: “Even when they have begun to go brown, it’s possible to store bananas in containers in the fridge for baking for up to eight weeks. And as far as banana bread or muffins are concerned, the browner the banana, the better!

“Really ripe bananas contain the most sugars and the most intense banana taste, so they’re well worth keeping to this point.”

For a quicker way to make bananas good for baking, without waiting for a couple of days, the advice is to put them in the oven for about 40 minutes at 180C.
