Bafana’s rising star humbled by Doctor Khumalo’s praise

Bafana Bafana and Sekhukhune United winger Elias Mokwana says he’s happy to be praised by Doctor Khumalo.

During two FIFA Series international friendly matches, Mokwana impressed the Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend. The 24-year-old scored his first goal for the national team against Andorra last week.

“Hugo Broos found a diamond now in Mokwana for Bafana Bafana. The boy is a diamond,” Doctor Khumalo told SABC Sport.

“The boy is positive, he’s going forward. I love wing players who challenge defenders because that is the reason we have wing players in football.”

Speaking to FARPost, Mokwana revealed his father used to tell him about ’16V’.

“Obviously, I was happy. Who wouldn’t be happy with Doctor [Khumalo] talking about me like that?” the Bafana star told FARPost.

“Some of these legends, I looked up to them. So it’s brilliant for all of them to talk about me like that. I looked up to Doctor Khumalo. My father used to tell me about him and used to show me some clips before he passed away.

“I grew up watching soccer with my father and I told him that I don’t see myself doing another thing, I can only see myself playing football,” he said.

Mokwana has impressed since making his debut for Bafana Bafana.

The Sekhukhune United winger should be one of the first names to be called for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.
