Chavan’s BJP Transition
Chavan’s move to the BJP has been the subject of intense speculation, particularly given his cryptic response to inquiries about his political future. His decision comes amidst earlier aspirations to join the BJP and secure a senior cabinet position in the Maharashtra Government. However, several reports suggest that his entry into the BJP was initially opposed by former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, citing concerns about strengthening the Congress faction within the BJP.
Despite initial hurdles, it is anticipated that Ashok Chavan will be welcomed into the BJP fold with an offer of a Rajya Sabha seat.
Impact on Congress
Chavan’s departure from the INC, alongside other notable figures like Baba Siddique and Milind Deora, underscores a significant setback for the Congress party. Analysts suggest potential electoral repercussions for the party in Maharashtra and beyond. Yesterday, Ashok Chavan submitted his resignation to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Nana Patole. In his resignation letter, Chavan referenced his tenure as a former MLA and highlighted his extensive political career. He served as an MP of Lok Sabha from 1987 to 1989 and again from May 2014 onwards. Chavan’s political journey included roles as the Vice President and General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress Committee from 1986 to 1995. He also served three terms in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, starting in 1999 until May 2014.
Chavan held the position of Chief Minister of Maharashtra from December 8, 2008, to November 9, 2010. His resignation from office in 2010 followed corruption allegations linked to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
