A portion at Mehboob Studio transported journalists to Punjab of 1980s today as Netflix launched the trailer of Amar Singh Chamkila. Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra, director Imtiaz Ali, music composer A R Rahman and Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh of Netflix made their presence felt.
Amar Singh Chamkila trailer launch: Diljit Dosanjh gets teary-eyed with Imtiaz Ali’s words of praise; Imtiaz says, “Without Diljit and Parineeti Chopra, this film couldn’t have been made”
Imtiaz Ali, at the event, revealed, “The first person I spoke to about the film was A R Rahman. We were wondering who should we cast. The first name that came in our mind was Diljit paaji’s. But we felt that this casting won’t happen and that he won’t do the film.”
Imtiaz then mentioned to host Neha Dhupia about her hubby, Angad Bedi saying, “I even remember talking to Angad. Angad also said, ‘Why don’t you talk to Diljit?’.” Neha quipped, “I am hoping Diljit recommends Angad’s name for another film!”
Imtiaz Ali then continued his story, “Finally, Diljit and I spoke. I thought I’ll have a five-minute conversation to fix up a time for narration. We ended up talking for an hour. What happens is that when you are telling the story to an actor, if you are liking it yourself, then that’s the actor you want in the film. The way Diljit listened to the narration, I started getting more interested in the story.”
Imtiaz Ali then even said, “I feel that without Diljit and Parineeti, this film couldn’t have been made. I hope when you all watch it, you realize why I say so.”
He continued, “Parineeti was also the number one choice. When I met her, she told me that ‘I have been waiting for five years to do a film where I can sing’. I said, ‘This is such a film’. She replied, ‘I am on’. And I replied, ‘Wow’!”
Imtiaz Ali observed, “Then we realized ki Parineeti ki shakal bhi milti hai Amar Jyot se. Then I told her to have samosa, malai, chaat, etc, since she had to gain 10 kilos. No actress or even actor would have put so much of weight.”
Towards the end, Imtiaz Ali stated how Diljit Dosanjh got into the skin of the character of Amar Singh Chamkila. The filmmaker told him, “Yeh bas aapki shuruaat hai,” adding that he has a long way to go. Diljit got teary-eyed on hearing this compliment.
Amar Singh Chamkila releases on Netflix on April 12.
