After Kanye West and Mariah Carey, 5 global pop stars you can still see in China in 2024

From Mariah Carey and Kanye West to John Legend and Westlife, global superstars have been filling China’s arenas and stadiums this year, as the country bounces back from the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 1987, then fifth grader West lived in China when his mother was a lecturer at Nanjing University. In September, fans flocked to Hainan Island for his two sold-out concerts at the Wuyuan River Sports Stadium, with around 80,000 tickets snapped up in minutes.

The same weekend, Carey took over Beijing’s Workers’ Stadium – which can hold 68,000 people – for two concerts celebrating the 20th anniversary of her album The Emancipation of Mimi.

Hong Kong will probably miss out on major international acts until the Kai Tak Sports Park, home to a 50,000-seat stadium, opens next year. For now, here are five live acts to catch in mainland China before the year is out.
