Cinnamon rolls are delicious paired with coffee or a cup of tea thanks to their fluffy, doughy texture.
Also known as cinnamon scrolls or buns, these Scandinavian sweet treats can be made in so many different ways, though they always feature three main components; bread-like dough, a sugared cinnamon paste, and sweet white icing.
One TikTok chef has shared her go-to recipe for cinnamon rolls, though her’s are made with a less traditional twist.
The social media sensation @breakorbake posted a video with the caption: “Yeah cinnamon rolls are okay, but chocolate cinnamon rolls topped with Nutella? That’s a different story.”
Nutella is the go-to ingredient for these indulgent chocolate rolls, but almost any chocolate spread will work.
Method
First, place a small saucepan over low heat on the hob and add the milk. Add the butter and stir continuously until the butter has melted.
Meanwhile, mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl and stir until combined. Pour the milk and butter mixture into the dry ingredients and combine to form a dough.
Move the dough into one large ball shape then knead over a lightly floured work surface for five minutes. Place into a lightly greased bowl and leave to rest for one hour, or until doubled in size.
Once the dough has risen, roll it on the floured surface to form the shape of a rectangle. The dough should be a medium thickness of 1-2cm, (not too thick or thin).
Spread the butter all over the dough up until the edges then mix the sugar and ground cinnamon and sprinkle it all over the dough. The TikTok star recommended doing this with your hands for the most even results.
Next, grab one of the long edges of the dough and start rolling it until you get a long log shape. Cut the top and bottom edges if they seem uneven, then cut the rolls into even sections using either a very sharp serrated edge knife or floss.
Place them in an oven tray and allow them to rise for another hour. Avoid squeezing them together, and leave some space between them to allow them to grow.
After they’ve risen, cook them in a preheated oven at 180C for 30-35 minutes until they start browning on top.
As the rolls cool, make the icing and drizzle it all over the top of the rolls while still slightly warm.
