Raised on mum’s home cooking, her favourite Hong Kong restaurants for dumplings and more

Belgian-born Sarah Greene is the owner of Blue Lotus Gallery in Sheung Wan, specialising in Hong Kong and Asian art photography and books. She spoke to Andrew Sun.

Growing up in Belgium, I was fortunate to have a mother who was an amazing cook. Unlike many peers who ate at school, I came home for lunch nearly every day until I was 18. I still prefer to eat at home most days. Now, I’m lucky to have a helper from the Philippines who enjoys cooking and does it very well. She cooks everything from Asian to Western food.

Hong Kong boasts an incredible variety of restaurants. I love the diversity here – you can find any cuisine you crave. Whenever I return to Belgium, I find myself missing Asian food after just a week.

Personally, I can’t go a week without dumplings. Hei Baat Fong (3-3A Upper Station Street, Sheung Wan. Tel: 2590 0800), near my gallery, makes delicious fresh dumplings in soup. Almost every Saturday I buy a set of soup dumplings and fried dumplings with spicy cucumber as a side dish to share with my colleague. Their home-made spicy sauce is also fantastic.

For a relaxed aperitif and snack, I love the newly opened Casa Iberica – The Iberico Shop (18B Tai Ping Shan Street, Sheung Wan. Tel: 5236 4696). The atmosphere is laid-back, and I enjoy sitting on the street on foldable chairs.

Alberto, the owner, always surprises me with a great glass of wine. They have very good ham, freshly cut.
