37-year-old Berkeley Thai restaurant loved by Cal students has closed

Berkeley Thai House, a Thai restaurant popular with UC Berkeley students, has closed after 37 years. The iconic second-story spot just two blocks from campus closed its doors on Dec. 15, the restaurant shared on Instagram. The news was first reported by the San Francisco Business Times

Fans of Berkeley Thai House can still enjoy their cuisine over in Richmond, though — in July, co-owners Anukool Manonuek and Christopher Sacheia opened a new restaurant called Prajam Thai in Richmond with a very similar menu of red and yellow curry, pad thai, pineapple fried rice and mango sticky rice. The brothers told the Mercury News they wanted to open a restaurant closer to where they live, having moved to Richmond a few years ago.

Berkeley Thai House first opened in 1986. A new restaurant is already slated to take its place at 2511 Channing Way: a Korean eatery called Hansikdang, according to a liquor license application spotted by the San Francisco Business Times.
