SINGAPORE: A construction worker at a Jurong Region Line work site died in the early hours of Jan 4 after he fell about 7.5m over the edge of the uncompleted platform.
The accident occurred at about 2.30am along Jurong West Street 75, where the upcoming Gek Poh station will be located.
The worker, a 27-year-old Myanmar national, was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital where he died of his injuries.
All work activities at the site were stopped immediately, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in response to queries on Saturday (Jan 6), adding that it takes a “serious view” of safety incidents.
“A safety timeout was also imposed on all worksites. We are also assisting the Ministry of Manpower with its investigations into the accident,” it added.
“We share our deepest condolences with the family of the deceased worker and are working with our contractors to provide them with support and assistance.”
In its statement, the Manpower Ministry said that the worker was erecting a platform when he fell.
It added that as a general safety measure, workers should be equipped with safety harnesses and secured to anchorage points at all times when there is a risk of falling from height.
The main contractor at the affected work site is CES_SDC, which was awarded a S$226.6 million contract in 2020 to design and build Gek Poh and Tawas stations, as well as two viaducts.
The employer of the deceased worker is Jiangxi Construction Development, said the Manpower Ministry.
Jurong Region Line – Singapore’s seventh MRT line – is set to open in three stages from 2027.
With 24 MRT stations, including three interchange stations – Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang and Jurong East – the Jurong Region Line is expected to improve connectivity in the western part of Singapore and support developments in the Jurong area.
