Woman shares three ways to save bananas after skin turns brown

Bananas are a delicious healthy snack packed with natural sweetness and an extra creamy texture that makes them the perfect ingredient for moist baked goods and thick smoothies.

But they have a reputation for going brown quite quickly — leaving many people throwing them in the bin before they’ve had a chance to eat them. However, those brown bananas on your counter aren’t past their prime and you can save them from going to waste.

One woman, who posts online under the TikTok username @purewow, took to social media to tell people to “stop wasting your ripe bananas” and offered fans three ways to enjoy them a little longer.

In the video, which has gained more than 700 likes, she said: “You can peel them, put them in a baggie, and freeze them for later to add to your smoothies.”

The second tip was to make banana milk. She was seen peeling the skin off the banana and whacking it in a blender with some water.

She added: “You can make banana milk with just bananas and water and blend. This comes out so creamy and you can use it for just about anything .”

Her third tip, she told fans to make ice cubes with them for their iced coffees — the perfect hack for keeping cool over the summer months. “Make banana ice cubes to add to your coffee for the perfect creamer,” she said.

TikTok users were left stunned by the clip as they took to the comments to suggest additional ways to prevent the fruit from going to waste. One user said: “I do frozen banana with almond and oat milk blended it’s my favourite breakfast.”

Another added: “Love bananas,” while a third commented: “I did banana milk.”

Meanwhile, a fourth suggested an item missing from the list: “BANANNABREAD!!!!” To which, the creator replied: “Now I’m in the mood for some.”

When bananas turn brown, they become sweeter because their starch turns into simple sugars. They also get softer and mushy.

This happens because certain substances in the bananas work harder as they get older, which also makes them turn brown. Even if they don’t look nice, brown bananas are safe to eat and great for baking and smoothies because they’re sweeter and blend well.
