Woman horrifies foodies by ‘washing pre-shredded cheese’

Many people have a strong dislike for soggy food – whether it’s being unable to stand eating it or accidentally touching it.

But one woman has left people horrified after she dilliberately made her food soggy in a viral video. So, if you have a strong dislike for soggy food, it may be best to look away now.

The woman, who posts online under the username @jeanelleandkate, claims washing pre-packed grated cheese is the “best kitchen hack ever.” In the video, which has gained more than 11,000 likes, she took cheese out of it’s packaging and placed it into a large sieve over a glass jug.

She then poured water of ther top of the cheese, claiming she was washing off anti-caking agents, which supposedly “stop the pieces from sticking together.”

“Have you heard of washing your cheese? This is the best kitchen hack ever. Saves you time from having to shred your own cheese, pre caking all the stuff on it that people don’t like about pre-shredded cheese,” she explained.

She went on to claim that the cheese is covered with an anti-caking agent to keep it separated and ready to use. But by “just pouring the water over the cheese” and using your hands to run it through it washes it off.

TikTok users were left horrified by the clip with many critics pointing out that she was making her food soggy. One user said: ” And now I have wet cheese? No thanks.”

Another added: “I think I will stick to grating my own.” Someone else penned: “Great, soggy cheese.” Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “Just shred your own cheese. It’s cheaper and better.”

Should I be washing my cheese?

Anti-caking agents are substances added to pre-shredded cheese to prevent the individual pieces from sticking together. They are are safe to consume so there is no need to wash your cheese.

During the packaging process, cheese can clump due to moisture or the natural stickiness of the cheese. By adding a small amount of an anti-caking agent, manufacturers can ensure the cheese flows freely and remains in separate, easy-to-use pieces.

Common anti-caking agents used in pre-shredded cheese include cellulose powder, potato starch, or powdered cornstarch. These agents absorb excess moisture and create a thin barrier around each shred of cheese, reducing clumping.

This makes it more convenient for consumers to sprinkle the cheese onto dishes without having to break apart lumps. The use of anti-caking agents also helps maintain the cheese’s appearance and makes it easier to handle and measure for recipes.
