Floyd Shivambu confirmed that he has ditched the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to join the Jacob Zuma-led Mkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

The South African previously reported that Shivambu confirmed his resignation in a media briefing at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Malema and Shivambu have been as thick as thieves since their days in the African National Congress (ANC) youth league where Malema was President and Shivambu was the spokesperson. The two have also served as President and Deputy President of the EFF since the organisation was formed.
During the briefing, Malema said they will not elect a Deputy President as the party will hold its National People’s Assembly, an elective conference, in December.
In an interview with the SABC in July, Malema said he is absolutely available to lead the party for the third term. He also acknowledged that it is up to the delegates whether he comes back from the conference as leader or not.
According to reports, some EFF members are rooting for the party’s former spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi to become secretary-general.
During the interview with the SABC, Malema said he has not heard of the contestation between Ndlozi and Dlamini.
“I don’t see why Mbuyiseni and SG [Dlamini] would contest each other…Whether you have Mbuyiseni or Marshall you have your best. If there is going to be such a contestation it will be amongst the best of the best of the EFF, but I don’t see it happening,” Malema said.
EFF WILL REMAIN EVEN IF PROMINENT MEMBERS RESIGN
Malema also assured EFF members that the party was not disintegrating, saying the doors of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela House would remain open for the foreseeable future.
“I will be buried with the flag of the EFF,” Malema said, adding that he would not betray the movement.
Further, Malema said the party’s policy does not allow members who have resigned to join other parties to return to the EFF. However, Shivambu can return to the Red Berets should he wish to do so because he is not just a comrade but his dear and because he co-founded the EFF.
“The day you decide to come back, you are more than welcome,” he said.
