Karla Sofía Gascón has become the first openly transgender actor who has been nominated for the Oscars. Well, the Spanish star has been praised for her exceptional performance as the titular character in Jacques Audiard’s musical crime film Emilia Pérez. Karla has bagged a nomination in the Best Actress category.
Who is Karla Sofía Gascón?
Karla Sofía Gascón was born on March 31, 1972, and had decided she wanted to be an actor when she was a teenager. She even got an acting degree from the ECAM and worked for BBC in London on language-learning children’s shows. She was seen in a Spanish daily show in the early 2000s. Karla moved to Mexico in 2009 to work in telenovelas. She completed her gender transition in 2018 and released a book under her birth name, Karsia, while announcing her new name. She walked down the aisle with Marisa Gutiérrez, and they have a daughter born in 2011.
She played the role of Emilia, a feared drug cartel lord who takes help of Zoe Saldaña’s Rita, a lawyer, to fake her death in the film. The movie was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and she managed to win the Best Actress prize with her co-stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Zoe. Well, this is the first time an openly transgender actor to won at Cannes too. Karla became the Chevalière of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres later in 2024. She is the first transgender woman nominated for the Golden Globes for acting.
Composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni and documentarian Yance Ford are the three openly transgender people in non-acting categories that have been nominated for the Oscars 2025. Actor Elliot Page was nominated for Juno in 2007. Cisgender actors like Jared Leto, Hilary Swank and Eddie Redmayne have also been awarded for playing transgenders in Dallas Buyers Club, Boys Don’t Cry and The Danish Girl.
Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Mikey Madison for Anora, Demi Moore for The Substance and Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here are the female actors nominated with Karla in the Best Actress category.
