In a thrilling match that took place on August 24, 2018, at the International Chess Federation World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa was beaten by the best chess player in the world, Magnus Carlsen.
When Carlsen won the first game in the Rapid Chess tie-breaker with the black pieces and managed to draw the second game with the white pieces, he demonstrated his tactical skill and ultimately outplayed Praggnanandhaa’s valiant efforts.
To further emphasize his achievements, Praggnanandhaa further enhanced his image as a highly proficient chess player by winning a silver medal in the men’s team competition at the 2018 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Recent updates from the International Chess Federation revealed that Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandhaa jointly hold the top spots as the world’s leading junior players. Both the 19-year-old German GM and the 18-year-old Indian GM claim the pinnacle of the January 2024 rankings, boasting identical FIDE ratings of 2743.
Notably, Indian GMs Gukesh Dommaraju, Vidit Gujrathi, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu are set to compete in the 2024 FIDE Candidates, showcasing India’s strong presence in competitive chess.
