Wetherspoons explains meaning of red plates after fans came up with bizarre theory

Wetherspoons fans were left somewhat confused after an online post brought light to the emergence of a new item at the popular chain.

The hospitality giant has been known to have blue floral-patterned plates across all chains in the UK.

However, a new Reddit post under the r/mildlyinteresting subreddit brought attention to rare appearances of a red version of the plate.

A customer uploaded a picture of the unexpected item, along with the caption: “My BF got a red plate in Wetherspoons.”

They added: “Spoons plates are always blue, never seen a red one before.”

And he isn’t the only person to have received a red plate over the years, with others asserting it has occurred to them as well.

People quickly shared their astonishment, with one user writing: “YOU GOT THE RED PLATE!”

Another person chimed in: “If you get the red plate in ‘Spoons, take it to the bar after and you get a free drink’.”

A former Wetherspoons employee mentioned that they had never encountered a red plate during their tenure at the chain, emphasising the unusual nature of their emergence.

And another user joked: “I think you’ve accidentally wandered into an alternative dimension.”

But Wetherspoons finally broke their silence to explain the real meaning of the novelty plates.

They told Fabulous: “Wetherspoon did trial a red plate in a small number of pubs for use for children’s meals, to ensure all children’s meals were served on a cold plate.

‌”The company has moved on since then and just launched a melamine plate for the whole children’s menu which is in line with the design of the children’s menu.

‌”But there will be stock of the old red plate in circulation, until they break. No plan to change from the standard blue patterned plate any time soon.”
