Western Cape dams overflow as MORE rain falls

The latest available official dam level stats in the Western Cape show that five of the six of the major dams in the province are in excess of capacity.

In some respite from the weather, the sun has made its spring appearance in recent weeks, bringing some warmer weather after a cold and wet winter.

As reported by The South African website, a series of strong cold fronts during July and August brought both rain and snow to the Western Cape.

The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – all saw increases in capacity during winter.

Down on last year

The City of Cape Town uploaded its latest stats on Monday, 16 September.

The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 100.7% of total storage.

That’s marginally down from the 103.1% the previous week.

The current levels are also down on the same period a year ago when the combined percentage stood at 101%.

Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than 50% of the province’s total dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI) is at 101% of capacity, while the next biggest dam, Voëlvlei (164 095 MI), is at 100.7%.

Western Cape residents need no reminding of life during the ‘Day Zero’ water crisis from mid-2017 to mid-2018.
