Western Cape beach voted among world’s best

Condé Nast Traveller has included Die Plaat Beach near Hermanus on their list of ‘The Best Beaches in the World’. Markedly, it is the only beach in South Africa to be recognised among a list of 34 beaches worldwide.

Where is Die Plaat Beach located?

Die Plaat Beach is a CapeNature beach within Walker Bay Nature Reserve near Hermanus in the Overberg district of the Western Cape.

CapeNature is very proud of the recognition that highlights the beach’s natural beauty and unique features. The beach stretches 17km and offers rich biodiversity, historical significance, and also beautiful scenery, as reported by capetownetc.

Condé Nast Traveller described Die Plaat Beach as ‘a ruggedly beautiful swath of sand fringed by rocky limestone outcrops’.

Klipgat Cave located on the beach is a bat-filled cave where late Middle Stone Age people lived up to 85 000 years ago. It is also a vital nurturing ground for southern right whales, especially during the whale season from June to December.

Significant achievement

Dr Ashley Naidoo, CEO of CapeNature

Additionally, he said that the achievement is ‘a testament to the extraordinary natural beauty of the Walker Bay Nature Reserve and the hard work and dedication of our teams on the ground to keep it in pristine condition’.
