Wedding Impossible Review: Jeon Jong Seo, Moon Sang Min and Kim Do Wan lead a fake marriage trope K-drama filled with laughter, chaos & romance

Fake marriage tropes are not a new genre in the world of Korean dramas. We all know how it would end for the couple eventually, but the charm of watching the characters go through the motions of hilarity, and embarrassment and fall into love in K-dramas is never dull when it comes to such stories. But what if a fake marriage trope is slightly altered? If the couple that enters into a fake marriage might not be together eventually, but they would get their own separate partners later? To answer these questions and bring in a wave of comic relief on screen, Jeon Jong Seo, Moon Sang Min and Kim Do Wan have come together in Wedding Impossible.

Wedding Impossible Review: Jeon Jong Seo, Moon Sang Min and Kim Do Wan lead a fake marriage trope K-drama filled with laughter, chaos & romance

The plot of Wedding Impossible is simple. We have our lovely female lead named Na Ah Jeong (played by Jeon Jong Seo), a struggling actress who has learnt a plethora of skills ‘just in case’. Despite being more talented than most other actors, she has yet to get her break after working hard for the past 15 years. She has been best friends with Lee Do Han (played by Kim Do Wan) since their high school days. Yet, she was unaware of the fact that he is a rich chaebol (heir) and also harbours another secret – that he is gay. Only she knows his secret. Then comes Do Han’s younger brother Lee Ji Han (played by Moon Sang Min), who has his own goals in place. He has successfully hidden his identity as a part of the conglomerate family and has risen up the ranks. He gets the work done, no matter what. In the first episode itself, Do Han proposes a fake marriage to Ah Jeong to keep his secret and not marry someone he does not love, & Ji Han sees it as a threat to his goals for himself and his brother. Thus begins a tale of these three people keeping up (and trying to break up) a fake marriage.

In the first two episodes of Wedding Impossible, we are introduced to our lead and supporting cast. It is quite a delight to see Jeon, Moon and Lee playing leads after having seen them as secondary cast in most K-dramas. So far, the actors have proven in the show that they can carry a story on their shoulders with an effortless ease. We know the characters’ back story enough to know the reasons for their current behaviours.

The chemistry between Ah Jeong and Ji Han is quite palpable. A clear enemies to lovers’ trope in the making! The duo were bickering even before they knew each other and if the trailer is anything to go by then one can expect a lot of heart-fluttering moments between the adorable leads.

Do Han and Ah Jeong’s friendship is built on looking out for each other through thick and thin. Over the years they have been each other’s support despite multiple failures. But their friendship is also flawed. Do Han kept a huge secret from her and Ah Jeong was also not honest about her latest work conditions. But the two handled the matter as adults. Eventually, they come to each other’s rescue when it is needed and thus begin their fake marriage trope with Ji Han closely watching every move.

Each episode of Wedding Impossible runs close to sixty minutes. While at times it might feel like a few edits would have been great, overall watching experience is quite enjoyable, given the show airs at the start of the week. There is an attempt to create dramatic moments by using slow motion or double take which almost does land its mark. It is a romantic comedy with familiar tropes and familiar character arcs, so there is bound to be a tad bit of predictability.

It is quite refreshing to see Sang Min embrace a rom-com role after donning a serious avatar in Under the Queen’s Umbrella. As Ji Han, he delivers a well-rounded performance which shows scope for further character development. Ji Han grew up with very little love from his family so he found his way to earn his place everywhere he went. With Ah Jeong, there seems to be a raw connection because, in a way, both of them have struggled to fight for their respect and place in a social setting.

Jeon Jong Seo, who wowed the audience as Tokyo in Money Heist Korea, is quite adorable as Ah Jeong in this K-drama. One can sketch her character to be a modern-day damsel in distress – one who needs help but would rather strive hard for it herself than wait for someone to come to her aid. Her and Do Han’s friendship might seem a little wonky and the fake marriage proposal might feel too little to be true, but it does work out in her favour. She gets the money she needs and also helps a friend. It will be quite fun to see Ah Jeong and Do Han settle into their ‘married life’ after their fake wedding goes through. Bae Yoon Kyung as Yoon Chae Won would certainly make a good addition to this relationship. Ji Han has already set his mind to not let his brother Do Han and Ah Jeong live in peace, after all.

As for the supporting cast, we find typical power-hungry and hypocritical siblings to Do Han and Ji Han whereas Ah Jeong’s sister and brother-in-law spare no chance to rub her failures in her face. Kwon Hae Yeo, whom we are currently also seeing in Flex X Cop does a good job as the chairman and a grandfather to the male leads in this drama. The drama has started on a promising foot with all its pieces in place for the characters to take the story ahead.
