We tried Pret’s new festive menu – it was delicious except for 1 item

From Festive favourites making a comeback to new Christmassy food innovations, the Express team were happy to taste test the whole of Pret’s Christmas menu.

Back due to popular demand is Pret’s Christmas Lunch Sandwich – thick slices of British turkey, herby pork stuffing, and Port and orange cranberry sauce.

Also nestled in between slices of malted bread are crispy onions and baby spinach, but did the sandwich deliver on its flavour? The taste tester rated Pret’s Christmas Lunch Sandwich as “5/5” because it tasted “really delicious”.

Elaborating, the reviewer said: “It’s the perfect blend of wet and dry with the cranberry sauce and crispy onions.”

Another highly regarded selection was Pret’s new Brie and Caramelised Onion Toastie, which was also given five stars. Inside the toastie, there is French brie, mature Cheddar, and sweet caramelised onion chutney warmed through on seeded bloomer bread.

The reviewer said the new toastie tasted “fresh and crispy”, adding that there was a “decent amount of both fillings” and that it was the “perfect festive sarnie”.

A recent newcomer, however, didn’t receive glowing reviews, so Pret may need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to the Hog Roast Macaroni Cheese.

Only given a two-out-of-five rating, the Hog Roast Macaroni Cheese – pasta full of ham, caramelised onion chutney, and panko breadcrumbs – was harshly slated as “bland and stodgy”.

“It will fill you up,” the reviewer added, before muttering: “But it’s pretty tasteless.”

The Very Merry Sandwich, a vegan option, is not only good for the planet, but for the people on it. Every Very Merry Sandwich bought will have 50p of the price donated to The Pret Foundation, supporting those facing hunger and homelessness.

Unaware of the sandwich’s virtuous premise, the taste tester said the Very Merry Sandwich has a “nice taste”, praising the stuffing, but adding: “[There’s a] a little too much carrot for me.”

Then there are the top performers – Pret’s Boxing Day Toastie and Pret’s Mince Pie. Scoring “5/5” the Boxing Day Toastie – filled with mature Cheddar, turkey, ham, herby pork stuffing, caramelised onion chutney and sage mayo – is “perfect for a lazy lunch”.

As for the Mince Pie, the taste tester said it has “thick, crumbly pastry, and is extremely deep filled”; what’s more, it has “tangy, delicious mincemeat”, and the reviewer could “happily eat these every day until December 25”.

Other Pret goodies included the Gingerbread Snowman biscuit, Chicken Festive Feast Sandwich, Christmas Tiffin, and the Christmas Lunch Baguette. Those who ran off with the Pret goodies without leaving a review are most definitely on Santa’s naughty list!
