Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has praised his players after reaching the CAF Champions League group stages on Saturday.
The Buccaneers managed to edge out Jwaneng Galaxy 3-0 on aggregate to reach the group stages for the first time in five years. The 49-year-old coach said he was pleased with the way his side played in the second leg.
Having won 2-0 in Botswana, Pirates just needed to keep things tight at the back and they did just that. A late goal from Monnapule Saleng put the ice on the cake to see the Sea Robbers win their third CAF CL match of the season.
Pirates coach Riveiro happy with the team
“We have an interesting group there,” Riveiro said as per iDiski Times.
“Group of young and talented players – bunch of winners! They want to continue improving and winning, and again having the continuity to playing in this type of tournament – the African Champions League.
“An interesting tournament against quality opponents and tough games, so every pinch of experience will come,” added the Spaniard.
Pirates have finished second in successive seasons under Riveiro. The coach said the key to success was to keep the momentum going this campaign.
“And our players going to the national team, playing in Afcon. It’s something that we can always capitalize on as a club, and as a group.
“The talent is there; the quality is there. We only need to keep going and accumulate experiences together and the future will be fine.”
Jose Riveiro’s next task is to defend the MTN8 as Pirates tackle Stellenbosch in the final next month. The Spaniard has won four trophies in two seasons and could add more in the coming weeks and months.
