Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding and managing Waqf properties through the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which he promised would be passed in Parliament soon. Speaking at a press conference to mark the 100-day milestone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third tenure in office, Shah emphasized that the bill also aims to prevent misuse of Waqf properties.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced last month in the Lok Sabha, has been sent to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further scrutiny after facing objections from opposition parties.A government official noted that the bill aims to reduce conflicts over Waqf properties and includes provisions for setting up a digital platform for online registration and monitoring of these properties.
Key initiatives in 100 days of NDA government
During the press conference, the government outlined several key achievements from the first 100 days of its current term. Among these, 63,000 tribal villages will be developed to uplift the socio-economic status of five crore tribals. The National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme has also been extended to include waste pickers, further promoting social and economic empowerment.
Additionally, the government has issued Unique Disability Identification Cards to three lakh people with disabilities from Scheduled Tribes, including 1.17 lakh for individuals aged 60 and above.
The PM-SURAJ initiative has expanded, now offering better access to subsidized loans for livelihood activities for Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, and sanitation workers. Meanwhile, the Eklavya Model Residential Schools program has enrolled over 1.23 lakh students in 405 schools, with 40 new schools established and smart classrooms created in 110 schools for tribal students.
