Vivo V30e vs Motorola Edge 50 Pro camera comparison: which one’s better?

Vivo’s latest Vivo V30e (review) shares many traits with the Vivo V30 and Vivo V30 Pro of earlier this year, but the biggest differentiator here is a more affordable price. Apart from some tweaks here and there to ensure affordability, its story is similar to that of its more feature-packed siblings. With its latest V-series offering, Vivo promises a reliable camera performance, especially with the built-in ring light on the back (called Smart Aura light). There’s a big focus on the design despite carrying a chunkier battery unit. You also get a curved display, which adds a touch of premiumness and aesthetics to the smartphone.

If you are considering Vivo V30e’s top variant, priced at Rs 29,999 for 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, you may come across Motorola’s new Edge 50 Pro (review). It offers similar features, like camera quality and design. Even though the Edge 50 Pro costs a bit more at Rs 31,999 for the same RAM and storage, it might appear as a more compelling option.

In that case, how do the two smartphones fare against each other, especially when it comes to the cameras? Here’s a detailed camera comparison between Vivo V30e and Motorola Edge 50 Pro.

Daylight

Both smartphones offer an impressive dynamic range in daylight. The Vivo V30e tries its best to keep contrast and shadows low for a more balanced approach. Whereas, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro plays with shadows and contrast to make photos look more dramatic than the actual scene.

In the photo above, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro captures more details, whether it’s the tiles of the building, floor, or fountain. It even captures an accurate shade of red tiles and blue windows of the building in the background. Overall, its photo appears more social media-ready.

In contrast, the Vivo V30e does a decent job, though it struggles to detect the right shade of red. Otherwise, both photos look good in their own respects. I am picking the Motorola Edge 50 Pro for its colouring treatment while maintaining the dynamic range despite prominent shadows.

Winner: Motorola Edge 50 Pro

Ultra-wide

Both smartphones are slightly inconsistent while capturing photos with the ultra-wide lens, but Motorola Edge 50 Pro again manages to get great details. While the Vivo V30e offers a wider field of view, it comes at the cost of sharpness in the photo.

In this case, details on the image with the Vivo V30e are blurry, and the smartphone also struggled to capture the right shade of red. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro does not only capture the textures on the tiles but even leaves in the foreground are highly detailed. The colour treatment isn’t the most accurate, but the photo looks more pleasing nonetheless.

Winner: Motorola Edge 50 Pro

Portrait

Vivo V30e and Motorola Edge 50 Pro utilise the primary rear camera for portrait shots, though the latter has the advantage of having an additional telephoto camera for these situations. For a fair contest, we are analysing the portrait shot captured by the primary camera.

The image with the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is high on saturation, as a result, the photo appears warmer than it actually is. The smartphone also struggles to balance areas on the face directly exposed to the sun. The output by Vivo V30e looks more natural, and the photo includes a richer bokeh despite capturing both photos with aperture setting F/2.0. Both phones do a great job at edge detection around the subject.

In this case, the point goes to the Vivo V30e, though readers must note that the Edge 50 Pro offers added versatility with the extra 10MP telephoto camera for portrait shots, which we didn’t compare in this test for a fair contest.

Winner: Vivo V30e

Selfie

Both smartphones treat the selfie (with portrait enabled) the same as the portrait shot with the rear camera, which is good in terms of consistency. Notably, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro manages to capture the tiniest facial details, even in areas somewhat masked by shadows.

The Vivo V30e has heavily beautified facial features, which frankly appeals to many customers. It’s a tough fight for those divided between aesthetics and details. Had the Motorola Edge 50 Pro managed to balance the shadows, it would’ve been an easy pick. The subject in the photo stands out more with the Vivo V30e, so the verdict favours Vivo.

If you picked the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, it’s fine.

Winner: Vivo V30e

Low-light

While the image with the Vivo V30e will appear brighter (hence more pleasing), the Motorola Edge 50 Pro captures more details in the background and foreground. Again, the smartphone plays with shadows and contrast for a more dramatic approach.

If you zoom in, you will notice that the Vivo V30e managed brighter areas relatively better, though the image gets much grainier. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro goes for a balanced approach, though it still needs improvements. Overall, the image with the Edge 50 Pro is clearer (with less noise) and has better details of the building in the background.

Winner: Motorola Edge 50 Pro

Low-light (night mode enabled)

After enabling night mode, the Vivo V30e performs surprisingly well. While its photo retains some graininess, it handles overexposed and underexposed areas much better. Even the details of the building in the background are clearer, and the signboard in its photos is more readable.

Overall, the photos also offer a better dynamic range in low-light conditions.

Winner: Vivo V30e

Verdict

Both Motorola Edge 50 Pro and Vivo V30e won three out of six scenarios each. While the results highlight a tie between the two, the Motorola Edge 30 may have an “edge” for portrait shots as the smartphone gets a dedicated telephoto camera. Similarly, the Vivo V30e can also surprise with low-light shots, especially with a human subject involved, thanks to the addition of Smart Aura LED lights.

In that case, if your budget can go a little above Rs 30,000, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro might be your best bet. If your budget is tight, the Vivo V30e will meet your camera-specific demands. However, before you make the final decision, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Both smartphones offer 4K30 recording with both front and rear cameras. In our test, Motorola Edge 50 Pro offered better stability while recording 4K videos.
  2. The Vivo V30e includes a 5,500mAh battery, while the Edge 50 Pro gets a 4,500mAh battery. If you choose the base variant of Edge 50 Pro, you will get a 68W charger in the box. The Vivo V30e gets 44W charging support.

As mentioned, the Edge 50 Pro has an additional 10MP telephoto camera. Its ultra-wide camera can also capture macro shots.
