Vivek Ramaswamy has restyled himself over the last year as Donald Trump’s biggest booster, despite ostensibly running against him for the Republican nomination for president in 2024. Ramaswamy has gone so far in his efforts to align himself with the former president that he has even emerged as a conspiracy theorist regarding the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
On Saturday, three years to the day after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol because they had been convinced by Trump that the election was stolen, Ramaswamy posted to X: “Happy Entrapment Day.”
The post is a reference to his theory that the attack was an “inside job” orchestrated by the U.S. government (which, we should note, was at the time run by President Trump.)
The post prompted users on X to remind Ramaswamy that in the aftermath of the attack, before his well-timed change of heart, he was harshly critical of Trump and his role in fueling the mob that beat police and hunted lawmakers, leaving multiple people dead and hundreds injured.
One user unearthed an appearance Ramaswamy made on Fox News with anchor Shannon Bream the night of Jan. 27, 2021, in which he claimed to have cried while watching footage of the attack.
“This might be controversial to say but I think that when I saw the disgrace that unfolded at the footsteps of the Capitol on January 6, I cried,” Ramaswamy said. “I was in tears when I watched on television that day.”

Ramaswamy made similar comments about the attack before he ran for the Republican nomination for president. In his 2022 book Nation of Victims, Ramaswamy tore into Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the consequences of those attempts on Jan. 6.
“It was a dark day for democracy,” Ramaswamy wrote. “The loser of the last election refused to concede the race, claimed the election was stolen, raised hundreds of millions of dollars from loyal supporters, and is running for executive office again.”
