The heartwarming trailer of Vijay 69 was released today by Netflix and it features Anupam Kher in a never-before-seen avatar. A day before the trailer launch, Anupam Kher spoke to a select group of journalists about his experience of doing the film and a lot more.
Vijay 69 trailer preview: “We should treat our parents as superheroes. Parents ko hum retire kar dete hai; Prime Ministers of most countries are usually above 75…” – Anupam Kher
Vijay 69 is the story of a 69-year-old man who wants to participate in the triathlon, which is an athletic contest consisting of swimming, cycling and running. As expected, his loved ones discourage him from participating in the race. Anupam Kher advised that older people should be allowed to live their lives the way they want.
He revealed, “My father retired at the age of 58. My mother feared, ‘Yeh ab ghar pe baithe rahenge subah se raat tak. Kaam nahin karenge. Subah newspaper padhenge’. My father went through a period of depression for 3 years due to retirement.”
Anupam Kher added, “We cliché our parents and it’s not their fault. It’s the fault of the children. In our minds, when they retire, we think, ‘Ab inka khayal rakhna hai. Yeh hamari zimmedari hai’. We don’t realize the psychological damage we do.”
He then said, “My mother is 86 and she has a rod in her leg. My mother went from Mumbai to Surat and then to Delhi last week. Then she proceeded to Jammu and finally returned to Mumbai. At the airport, she refuses to opt for the wheelchair. She also doesn’t want to put the hearing aid. Uski wajah se thodi comedy hoti hai (laughs)!”
He also stated, “My father, until the age of 84, used to walk 20 km every single day in Shimla. He used to hate coming to Mumbai. I used to ask him, ‘Why don’t you stay with us? Aapke dono bete yahaan rehte hai’. He replied, ‘Jahaan mujhe sadak cross karne mein 20 minute lag jaaye, main wahaan kyun jaaun?’.”
Anupam Kher continued, “We should treat our parents as superheroes. Parents ko hum retire kar dete hai. 70 is nothing. I’ll turn 70 next year. The Prime Ministers of most countries of the world are usually above 75. We use their expertise and wisdom. Parents ko leke hum pata nahin kyun aise ho jaate hai?”
He ended his topic by exulting, “This film will make you look at your elders in a completely different way.”
Produced by YRF Entertainment, Vijay 69 drops on Netflix on November 8.
