AN UNASSUMING town in the north of England is set to be a popular spot for a staycation in the UK.
Rising flight and accommodation costs mean lots of people are looking to stay in the UK this year instead of going abroad.
According to research gathered by London Northwestern Railway, Crewe could be a popular spot for a day out in the UK.
Sophie Gardner, Sales and Partnerships Manager at London Northwestern Railway, said: “After the buzz of Christmas, January tends to be a slower, quieter month, with many people trying to recuperate – both physically and financially.
“But according to our analysis of Google data, it looks as though families are looking to make January more exciting this year by planning fun days out together in towns and cities across the UK.”
A team of travel experts at London Northwestern Railway analysed the data from Google, which saw a rise in searches like “family days out” and “affordable activities.”
According to the data searches for Crewe were up 133 per cent year-on-year.
Meanwhile, Wolverhampton saw a 33 per cent rise, and searches for Liverpool rose by 27 per cent.
The uptick in surges for Crewe could be down to its starring role in the hit TV show Fool Me Once, starring Michelle Keegan.
David Whitby Way, a road in Crewe, was on the filming locations in the town.
Known for its well-established railway network, Crewe may seem like an unusual choice for a UK staycation.
But the northern town has plenty of attractions, including Funsters – one of the tallest and largest playframes in Europe.
Set across six floors, Funsters has slides, tunnels, glass decks and plenty of soft play areas built with padded flooring.
Other features include a mini football pitch, a play kitchen, and a car play mat where children under four can play.
There’s also a large coffee area where adults can relax with a warm beverage as their children play.
Prices start from £7.95 for children aged 12 and under, while tickets for adults cost £2.
There’s also the Crewe Heritage Centre, which is set to open on March 29 for its 2024 season.
There are plenty of attractions inside the railway museum, including a miniature railway.
On the miniature railway, there are several tiny trains in operation including Jenny, a red steam locomotive.
The museum is a train enthusiast’s dream as it has several different types of signal boxes, including the Exeter West Signal Box, which was originally built by the Great Western Railway in 1913.
Other signal boxes include the North Junction Signal Box, which was constructed in 1938, and the Station ‘A’ Signal Box, which first opened in 1908.
Other attractions at the railway museum include model railways, an Exhibition Hall and a collection of ice cream vans.
Entry tickets for this year go on sale on March 1, 2024, and cost £7 for £5 for a child.
In addition to the railway museum, Crewe also famous a world-famous Bentley attraction, where visitors can go on tours of the factory.
Tickets cost £40 per person, with places on the tours being highly limited.
Here are the six best staycation locations for 2024 – and where to stay in all of them.
