UK’s ‘best seaside’ village also has one of the ‘most beautiful castles in Europe’ | Travel News | Travel

There is no need to spend hundreds of pounds on your next holiday, as Britain has some extraordinary beaches worth travelling to due to their natural beauty.

Bamburgh is an enchanting seaside village on the coast of Northumberland, England with breathtaking views of the North Sea, and on clear sunny days, you can even see out to the Scottish coastline.

However, Bamburgh is worth a visit at least once due to its long stenches of white sandy beaches, which have been voted one of the most beautiful yet underrated beaches in the UK with hardly any crowds.

Overlooking the village’s vast beaches is the ancient Bamburgh Castle believed to have first been built by the Celtic Britons, and is perched on a rocky cliffside with an incredibly rich history worth exploring.

The village and castle was named the “best seaside destination” in the UK by Which? for the third year in a row in 2023 and has also been named the No. 1 location to visit according to Airbnb.

Visit Northumberland has described Bamburgh as being a “pristine beach, drifting sand dunes, snug eateries tucked away on street corners and a magnificent castle view everywhere you turn.”

Bamburgh Castle has also been described as one of the “most beautiful castles in Europe” according to CN Traveller and is also believed to have been Sir Lancelot’s famous Joyous Garde Castle from the King Arthur legends.

There is plenty to see if you decide to visit Bamburgh Castle, as not only does it hold dramatic views of the surrounding coast and countryside but its history goes back over a thousand years and it played a prominent role in the War of the Roses.

In modern times, Bamburgh Castle has also made its way onto our televisions as it is one of the settings of the medieval show The Last Kingdom, and currently, costumes and props from the Netflix series are part of the exhibition at the castle until November 2024.

Dogs are also allowed outside on the castle grounds as long as they are kept on a lead, so you can explore the castle’s battlements and courtyard with your furry friends before getting a bite in the castle’s cafe, which is also dog-friendly.

However, there is plenty to explore on Banburgh’s surrounding beaches such as Stag Rocks, located near the lighthouse where a huge painted white stag can be easily spotted on the rocks.

According to local folklore, a stag jumped into the sea after hunters chased after it, and there are also tales that St Aidan saved a stag from a pack of hounds by turning it invisible.

Stag Rocks is also the perfect place to look out for wildlife, as seals and dolphins can sometimes be spotted as people look out onto the specular view of the ocean.

Visitors can also take a guided boat tour out to visit the nearby Farne Islands, a nature reserve famous for its grey seals and puffins.

There is also the Holy Island of Lindisfarne which was an important site of Celtic Christianity and was a priority until the 1500s when King England VIII disbanded all monasteries in England.

Visitors can visit the Lindisfarne Castle, priority and St Aiden’s Winery, where they can enjoy a free sample of mead as well as explore the little island shops, pubs, cafes and museums.

There is plenty more to explore in Bamburgh as it is steeped in history, and folklore and has some of the most incredible natural sights in Britain, making it an essential stop for anyone planning an Easter or summer staycation.
