UK weather: Heavy rain set to lash parts of Britain today, Met Office warns – but more glorious sunshine isn’t far away

HEAVY rain will lash parts of the UK today – but more sunshine isn’t too far away, the Met Office has said.

A new weather system brought downpours across northern parts of Britain in the early hours of Monday, with further rain on its way.

The Met Office has warned of “particularly heavy rain” as temperatures fall into the “mid-single figures”.

And while, southern areas will continue to hold onto sunshine, “further wet weather” is said to be on the way later this week.

Met Office meteorologist Allie Glaisyer said: “This next system arrives from the north west, affecting Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland.

“The rain will turn particularly heavy across western parts of Scotland through the early hours of Monday morning.

Elsewhere, though, it generally stays drier overnight and under those clear spells we could see temperatures dropping down into the mid-single figures. But towns and cities will hold up above 10C.”

Ms Glaisyer warned the rain will “push its way eastwards” as the day wears on.

She added: “That area of rain continues to push its way eastwards on Monday morning, though the south east of England will hold onto a bit of sunshine for a time.

“As that system clears its way towards the east, western parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and south west England will definitely see a bit of sunshine in the afternoon.

“Temperatures are looking similar to what we saw on Sunday, in the low 20s in the south, but further north generally staying in those mid to high teens.

“There is also further wet weather coming later in the week.”

Glastonbury-goers were able to revel in sunshine as the festival was brought to a close, while tennis fans were made the most of the weather at the Rothesay International in Eastbourne on the south coast.

Tuesday will be brighter with a mix of sunshine and showers, before rain returns to the north west on Wednesday.

Temperatures will hover around the average for this time of year, forecasters said.
