No one knows where the jury currently deciding Donald Trump’s fate in the hush money trial will land in regard to guilty versus not guilty, but one person who seems to be extremely concerned that the verdict will be guilty? Donald Trump. We know this because of his strange ramblings outside the courtroom on Wednesday, in which he claimed, more than once, that “Mother Teresa could not beat” the charges against him.
Speaking to reporters, the ex-president opined: “I would say, in listening to the charges from the judge, who’s, as you know, very conflicted and corrupt—because of the confliction,* very, very corrupt—Mother Teresa could not beat these charges. These charges are rigged; the whole thing is rigged. The whole country is a mess between the borders and fake elections, and you have a trial like this where the judge is so conflicted he can’t breathe…. It’s a disgrace, and I mean that. Mother Teresa could not beat those charges. But we’ll see. We’ll see how we do.”

This is obviously an odd claim to make, as it imagines a world in which Mother Teresa was criminally charged with falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to a porn star alleging they had an affair. (Would an on-trial MT relentlessly complain about how cold the courtroom was? Trump didn’t say.) But it’s also uniquely Trumpian and reminiscent of his oft-repeated declaration that no president in history has been treated as unfairly as he has, including Abraham Lincoln. (“They always said Lincoln—nobody got treated worse than Lincoln. I believe I am treated worse,” Trump told Fox News in 2020.)
The jurors in the criminal trial began their deliberations on Wednesday. While a decision could come as early as today, it’s possible we might not hear the verdict until next week.
*Yes, he actually said this.
