Former President Donald Trump spoke to the Daily Mail for an interview published Thursday, in which he discussed Florida’s abortion amendment on the ballot in November.
The British tabloid reported that Trump “said he has decided how he will vote” on the amendment that would change his home state’s constitution to ensure that abortion will remain legal until fetal viability, which is usually around 23–24 weeks of gestation.
“Well, I do know, but I do want more than six weeks. I want more than six weeks,” Trump told Rob Crilly, the Mail’s chief political correspondent.
“I think six weeks is a mistake. And I’ll be expressing that soon, but I want more than six weeks,” Trump said, referring to the current law in Florida that bans abortion after six weeks.
“And in Florida, we have a six-week program, and that’s what I believe that you’re voting on, and I think it should be more than six weeks,” Trump added.
In early August, Trump was asked during a press conference how he would vote on the Florida abortion referendum. He replied, “Well, I’m going to announce that — I’m going to actually have a press conference on that at some point in the near future.”
“So I don’t want to tell you now. But Florida does have a vote coming up on that and I think probably the vote will go in a little more liberal way than people thought. But I’ll be announcing that at the appropriate time,” Trump added.
Trump’s remarks to the Mail are his first statements on the topic since promising a statement, but still did not concretely establish how he will vote. The amendment will need 60 percent of the vote to become law.
Trump raised eyebrows last week when he posted to his Truth Social, “My Administration will be great for women and their reproductive rights.” Crilly kicked off the interview by asking about the post, which Trump said was about protecting IVF.
Trump, who was key to overturning Roe v. Wade and has long boasted about doing so, would not commit on whether or not he would veto a federal abortion ban as president.
