New Delhi, August 21: Japanese car maker, Toyota reportedly confirmed a significant data breach involving the theft of 240GB of sensitive information by a hacker group. The breach has raised concerns about the security measures in place to protect employee and customer data. As per reports, the stolen data includes critical information such as financial records, contracts and network infrastructure details, which poses potential risks to those affected.
The incident follows a series of security challenges for Toyota, which has reportedly experienced multiple breaches in recent years. In 2023, Toyota Financial Services (TFS) reportedly experienced two significant data breaches. The first breach occurred when a cloud database was not properly set up, which led to the exposure of car-location details belonging to 2.15 million customers over a period of ten years. As per reports, the second breach happened when Toyota’s European and African divisions were targeted by a ransomware attack, resulting in the compromise of sensitive personal and financial information. As per a report of Times Now, Toyota confirmed the data breach and revealed that the hacker group known as ZeroSevenGroup managed to infiltrate a US branch of the Japanese car maker. The attackers reportedly used an open-source tool called ADRecon to extract large amounts of data from Toyota’s Active Directory environments. Toyota has not provided information about the specific time they discovered the breach, how the attackers managed to gain access to their systems, or the exact number of individuals who were impacted by the data exposure. Although Toyota has acknowledged the data breach, they have assured that the issue is limited in scope, affecting only a specific branch and not the entire company.
