TikTok mum’s ‘easiest poached egg ever’ doesn’t even require a pan

When cooking a poached egg, your first port of call might be to fire up the hob and reach for a pan. However, according to TikTok creator and mum Jennifer, the “easiest” method doesn’t require either of these things.

Jennifer Valentyne, who describes herself as a “mum who loves cooking, cocktails and comedy”, often shares recipes to TikTok, and in one video she wowed fans with her simple egg recipe.

Rather than cooking the egg on the hob, Jennifer prefer to make her poached eggs in the microwave. All you need is a cup of water, a dash of vinegar and, of course, the microwave.

Vinegar is often hailed as a vital ingredient when making poached eggs. This is because the acidity of vinegar helps increase the rate of denaturing and helps the poached egg hold its shape.

Although vinegar has a strong taste and smell, a few drops are unlikely to affect the taste of your egg.

Any type of vinegar can do the job but most chefs recommend using white vinegar as the lack of colour means that it will not lead to discolouration of your egg.

Darker vinegar, such as balsamic vinegar, is typically advised against as it can turn your egg an unappetising shade of brown.

In her video, Jennifer said: “The easiest poached egg you’ve ever made. Add one teaspoon of vinegar to a cup of cold water and then add your egg.”

Once she had added the vinegar and egg to the cup of water, she popped it straight into the microwave. The TikTok mum explained: “Microwave for one minute.”

Once removed, Jennifer said that your egg should be “perfect”.

She continued: “I put it on my sprouted grain toast and add a little salt and paper.” Upon cutting into her egg a golden, runny yolk oozes out. She said: “That’s beautiful, look at that, perfect.”
