Amitabh Bachchan as Badshah Khan from Khuda Gawah has been one of the most iconic performances of the superstar in his six-decade-long career. The film was one of the most expensive films of that era and had a huge star cast of Sridevi, Nagarjuna, Shilpa Shirodkar, Kiran Kumar, and Danny Denzongpa. The film will complete its 32nd anniversary this year.
On the 30th anniversary of the film, the film’s producer, Manoj Desai, shared some interesting anecdotes about the film. In his conversation with Bollywood Hungama, he revealed that Amitabh Bachchan wanted an authentic location for the film, and hence Afghanistan was chosen. However, things were not politically stable at that time.
Desai also recalls the threats he got from Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi’s mothers. He shared that Amitabh Bachchan’s mother, Teji Bachchan, told him that if anything happens to Amit, then his (Manoj’s) wife Kalpana will also wear a white saree. She also warned him not to come back from Kabul. Sridevi’s mother also made a similar threat; she told Manoj that if anything happens to Sri, then she will get him killed.
But thankfully, everything went on fine without any problems, and all crew members came back safe and sound. The film was directed by Mukul Anand and had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The film was a roaring success not only in India, collecting more than Rs 18 crore, but also in Afghanistan. It ran to packed houses for 10 weeks in Kabul.
