But instead, Murthy made a surprising decision – he opted to take up the role of chief system programmer at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad.

It was indeed a tough decision for Narayana Murthy when he decided to give up several highly lucrative roles. The question that pops up is why he chose to become the chief system programmer at IIM-A, rather than banking on those profitable opportunities.

In 2019, Murthy disclosed in an interview that he had decided to join IIM-A because it was going to install the first time-sharing system in the country.

“So I was the only person from my batch of 16 students to have taken half the salary in quest of learning about a modern operating system, about the opportunity to interact with very bright students, about the opportunity to create lots of interactive lessons using computers for students in accounting, in simulation, in finance, in production, etc. So therefore I chose that path and that’s probably the best decision I made in my life,” Murthy said.

Narayana Murthy’s career journey commenced with an earning considerably less compared to his current net worth, which stands at Rs 530 crore today. Way back in 1981, along with six other tech enthusiasts, he laid the foundation of Infosys, beginning with a modest investment of Rs 10,000. Presently, Infosys stands tall with an impressive market capitalization of Rs 786,000 crore.

Married to the renowned educator and writer, Sudha Murty, Murthy shares his life and home with their two children. Their daughter, Akshata Murty, is wedded to Rishi Sunak, who holds the esteemed position of Prime Minister in the United Kingdom.
