Do you know that there was an actor who was hailed as a villain, and every grey role he portrayed was loved by the audience? Can you guess the name.
Villains are an essential part of Bollywood. If a film does not have a good antagonist, the role of the protagonist or the lead actors also loses its impact. Every time we talk about villains in Bollywood, only a few names pop up as all-time best villains in B-town, such as Gulshan Grover, Danny Denzongpa, and Prem Chopra. However, do you know that there was an actor who was hailed as a villain, and every grey role he portrayed was loved by the audience? If you are unable to guess who we are talking about, the actor in discussion is the late Amrish Puri.
Born on June 22, 1932, Puri acted in more than 450 films between 1967 and 2005. All the movies he worked in turned out to be commercially successful, and he was regarded as one of the most successful villains in Bollywood.
He began his film career in 1971 with the movie Reshma Aur Shera. From playing Mogambo in Mr. India to Baldev Singh Chaudhary in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, he carved a unique identity for himself. The legendary actor was also known for demanding a hefty fee for his roles.
Did you know Amrish Puri left a government job to pursue acting, and although he came to become a hero, he became a hit as a villain?
When Amrish Puri slapped Govinda
Did you know that once Amrish lost his temper and slapped Govinda? Yes, you read that right! According to media reports, Govinda and the late actor were working together on a film. While the legendary actor arrived on set earlier, Govinda was late. Puri had always been a disciplined man.
Media reports suggest that Govinda arrived on set nearly nine hours late. This delay allegedly led to an argument, during which Amrish Puri lost his temper and reportedly slapped Govinda.
In 2003, Amrish’s health started to deteriorate. He lost his appetite, leading to his gradual weakening. Despite his condition, he remained committed to his work and fulfilled all his professional obligations. During this time, he signed five films: Kachchi Sadak, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Kisna, Hulchul, and Aitraaz, completing their shooting even in such a critical state.
In 2003, while filming Jaal: The Trap, Amrish Puri met with an accident that required a blood transfusion. Later, he was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. The renowned actor, known for his iconic villainous roles, took his last breath on January 12, 2005.
